Dave Dombrowski did all he could Tuesday to not burst out laughing when he addre sed the sign-stealing "scandal" involving his Red Sox and the rival Yankees. You can take your pick of what Dombrowski might have found funny: That he had to answer questions about something every club in baseball tries to do. That the media were taking this so seriously, with even Boston columnists authoring breathle stakes about a lack of integrity and the po sibilty of firings. ThattheYankees breached baseball etiquette by Trea Turner Youth Red Jersey informing the media of the shenanigans. Yes, it turns out there's a certain etiquette to telling a rival you know he's cheating: Keep it behind closed doors and man to man.MORE: Sabathia says dumb stuff about Sox bunting on himAs Dombrowski reminded those who had gathered for his Bryce Harper 2018 All-Star Game Jersey pre s conference at Fenway Park, stealing signs is about as old as baseball itself and not at all discouraged."I've been in the game for 40 years, I've known of it for 40 years," Dombrowski said. He also said that men who played in the 1950s have told him stories about stealing signs. Dombrowski began his front-office career in the White Sox organization, which for many of his years there employed one of the most renowned sign-stealers in baseball history, Joe No sek, as a coach.Sports Illustrated interviewed No sekin 2010 for a story on sign-stealing. Much of that article, in fact, tracks very closely to the current Yankees-Red Sox kerfuffle. No sek told the magazine his work resulted in fewer "gotcha" moments than one might imagine, but he knew he got into other teams' heads at times. He also said few players wanted to be told what pitch was coming, out of fear a teammate might get it wrong.MORE: Could youth be secret ingredient in making rivalry spicy again? The story contained two more prescient pa sages. The first wasa quote from Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who was in his third year as the Bombers Ryan Zimmerman Jersey ' skipper in '10: "If your club is smart enough to pick up on what another club's signs are, that's just using your head." Fast-forward to 2017: Girardi on Tuesday denied the Red Sox's counterclaim that New York steals signs, too, with the aid of TV cameras. The second was this sentence written by the story's author, Joe Lemire: "The consensus among players and coaches is that any code deciphering by uniformed personnel is part of the game, but when outside equipment electronic, mechanical or otherwise is used, that's cro sing the line."The Yankees, we've been told, apparently caught the Red Sox using an Apple Watch to intercept signs that supposedly were then relayed to Boston players. Baseball lore is packed Men's Bryce Harper Scarlet Jersey with tales of binoculars and buzzers and blinking lights and all manner of other apparati being employed to tip off hitters. Now add timepieces to the list.Maybe that's why the Bombers went public: The Red Sox just didn't cheat the right way.In fact, baseball commi sioner Rob Manfred, who was in Boston on Tuesday for a previously scheduled visit, alluded to that po sibility when he jousted with Beantown's knights of Brandon Kintzler Jersey the keyboard."We actually do not have a rule against sign-stealing and it has been a part of the game for a very, very long time," he told reporters. "To the extent there was a violation of a rule here, it was a violation by one or the other (team) that involved the use of electronic equipment."Manfred said all this with a straight face, though not a grim one. It would have been OK for him to sneak in a grin, because this whole situation is pretty darn laughable.
